Last year, Kyle and I made last-minute plans to meet his parents for dinner in downtown Annapolis. We parked just outside of St. John's campus (like I always do) and began to cut across campus to Main St. I noticed on our drive in seer-sucker suits & women with giant hats & lavish gowns, but once we hit campus, it was like stepping on the set of The Great Gatsby. I said to Kyle, "Are we on a movie set?!" The lawn was filled with picnic blankets & couches. Thousands of people strolled the grounds of St. John's dressed to the nines. Kyle's Meshuggah t-shirt (which stood out even more than usual in this crowd) attracted one spectator to stop & chat. He explained that we had stumbled into the annual croquet match between the Naval Academy & St. John's. We learned that every year, thousands of spectators come out dressed like something out of the 1920's. I made a mental note of the event & hoped I'd have the opportunity to enjoy it a little more in 2012. Despite the threats of rain, I made it down to St. John's & took a few shots. I could barely believe my eyes when I wondered on to a swing dance group. It was such a joyful & fun atmosphere & I'm glad I was able to take some of it in this year.
