Now that you know all the reasons you should book your newborn session, you're probably wondering how to prepare. After doing many, many newborn sessions, here are a few tips I believe will help you get ready for one of the most special sessions of your (and your baby's) life! 1. Crank up the heat! Newborns are happiest when they are nice and toasty. I have a space heater that I bring along to all my newborn shoots to make sure the baby is nice and warm, but I also recommend turning up the heat in your home to make sure things are comfortable for the little one. A good room of thumb is; if you're sweating, baby's happy!
2. Dig out the heirlooms! Prepare any special blankets that you'd like to incorporate in the shoot. Maybe something your Mother crocheted for the new baby, or maybe even the blanket your Grandmother made for you when you were a newborn! It's personal touches like these that make your newborn shoot so incredibly special & timeless.
3. A full baby is a happy baby. Now, I understand that it's likely you have very little control at this point on when your baby feeds! However, if possible, it's best to try to feed about an hour to a half-hour of when your session. That way, the baby will be nice and sleepy for her shoot. As a bonus, if baby is awake, she will be alert but content. "What if the baby's still hungry during the shoot & won't stop fussing even though I tried to feed??" That brings me to my next point:
4. Don't stress over a fussy baby! A skilled newborn photographer will know how to calm & soothe your newborn so you can relax. If baby needs to stop to feed, that's ok! Most newborn photographers allot time for this during newborn sessions.
5. K.I.S.S KEEP IT SIMPLE SWEETIE! (Okay, I know the original acronym does not include the word "sweetie", but I'm not trying to be a jerk to new mommies, know what I'm sayin??) The less you have to distract from your perfect newborn, the more you'll love the images you take away from your session. Try to keep baby out of clothes with busy patterns, large logos & writing. Instead, get some plain white onsies, or you can just stick to the bare basics, if you know what I mean !
Most importantly; relax & enjoy this time. You're giving yourself a wonderful gift by working with a photographer for a newborn session. You'll walk away with priceless memories frozen in images that will take you back to an exciting and special time in your life for years to come.
