The very idea of making an appointment to set aside time for the sole purpose of eating cake is more appealing to me than I can express here. Kyle and I were really pumped for our cake tasting with Mindy Touhey & sister Liz Rega at Cake Couture in Spring City, PA. These two have been intertwined in our lives for a long time now. I remember watching Liz swim with my cousin as a Hillside Piranha back in the day, and later our roads crossed again when we all ended up at Kutztown University! Kyle and Liz took many Art classes together & formed a friendship. Liz's older sister, Mindy, has had quite a bit of work done by Kyle & his father, Jody who build custom cabinets (JL Dietz Cabinetry). So, it only made sense that we would work with these talented women for our wedding day cakery. Besides being laid back and easy to work with, these two are super talented. I'm convinced they can make anything into a cake & make it TASTE as great as it looks. Have a look at their website gallery & you'll see what I mean.
When we walked into the clean, bright cake shop on that cold, January morning, we were immediately welcomed by Liz & Mindy (and the amazing smells of freshly baked goodies!). After catching up a bit, they bought us samples of cake, and icing. Wow. What a display. (Please excuse the quality of photos in this post. They are either iPhone shots, or borrowed from the Internets :) ).
Our cake choices were vanilla pound cake, white cake, lemon cake, chocolate chip cake, chocolate cake, sweet potato cake & red velvet. Icing choices included vanilla buttercream, vanilla cream cheese, raspberry, black-berry, some kind of orange/lemon mixture that tasted like a creamsicle, chocolate buttercream & chocolate cream cheese. Er.Mer.Gerd, people. It was all good. IT WAS ALL GOOD!! Of course, there were even more flavors, Mindy said, if somehow THIS wasn't enough for us to choose from.
Mindy & Liz left Kyle and I to our own devices for a few minutes as we mixed & matched all the cakes and icings; trying to make the impossible decision of "Which combination wins at being the most delicious?" Kyle's better at coming up with combinations of food than I am since he's the "risk taker" of our duo. If left up to me, I wouldn't stray far from my comfort zone & probably would've gone with a "Vanilla buttercream/Vanilla pound cake" combo. So exciting, I know. But, as they say, "Life begins just outside of your comfort zone." and apparently, so does Sweet Potato cake with Vanilla Buttercream icing. Because that's what we're going with. Holy Moses, it's amazing. It's like every wonderful Fall day/feeling you've ever had...in cake form.
Next, we talked aesthetics. Here's the part where I had more of an opinion than Kyle :) Mindy took notes on my ideas & drew up a mock sketch of our cake silhouette. That's right! Just like your wedding dress has a silhouette, so does your cake! And it's actually pretty important. She asked me about colors I love, flowers we're using & the general look & theme of our wedding. I have seen a lot of their work & pretty much gave her an idea of what I want, and I'm letting them get creative with the rest. Liz has a beautiful style of painting & has done some gorgeous work on cakes. In all the weddings I've photographed, I've never seen anything like it. So, Kyle and I both agreed that we would love to have a "Liz Rega" orginial on our wedding day.
Now that Mindy & Liz know what kind of look we're going for & the colors I love (pastels, blushes, muted tones), they'll create an edible masterpiece. Part of the fun in hiring artists you trust is letting them do what they do. I can't wait to see what they create for Kyle & I and I'm so thankful to be working with such wonderful ladies!
